Pure Sleep Starts Here – New Baby Mattress Collection by Comfort Pure

The Comfort Pure Baby Mattress Collection is a line of handcrafted crib mattresses manufactured in the United States. The collection relies on natural materials, including organic cotton, New Zealand wool, and plant-based foams, to reduce infant exposure to synthetic chemicals. These mattresses are engineered to comply with safety standards for firmness and breathability, addressing parental concerns regarding non-toxic crib mattresses and infant sleep health.

Manufacturing and construction

Unlike conventional mattresses that often use solvent-based adhesives to bond layers, Comfort Pure units are hand-tufted. This method compresses the internal layers of cotton and wool under tension, which secures the materials without chemical glues. The resulting surface is dense and flat, providing the support required of a firm infant mattress under pediatric safety guidelines.

Materials

The collection utilizes several primary materials:

  • Green cotton refers to raw, untreated cotton washed with mild soap but not subjected to chemical bleaching, dyeing, or formaldehyde treatments. It retains a natural off-white color.
  • Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Several models use certified organic cotton for the casing and filling.
  • New Zealand wool functions as a natural fire barrier. The high moisture content and keratin proteins in the wool fibers allow the mattresses to pass federal flammability tests without added chemicals.
  • Plant-based foam is an alternative to standard polyurethane. It incorporates vegetable oils (such as castor or soy) to reduce the percentage of petroleum-based ingredients while maintaining density.

Regulatory compliance and flame retardants

In the United States, mattresses must meet the flammability standard 16 CFR Part 1633. While many manufacturers use chemical flame retardants or fiberglass barriers to pass this open-flame test, Comfort Pure uses two alternative methods.

The first is the wool barrier method. Used in the Natural Cotton & Wool Crib Mattress, a layer of quilted wool effectively self-extinguishes, allowing the model to meet federal safety laws naturally.

The second is the prescription exemption. The Organic All-Cotton and Organic Cotton & Foam models do not contain wool or chemical fire barriers. Under federal law, these chemical-free mattresses may be sold only to customers who provide a prescription from a licensed physician (MD, DO, or Chiropractor). The prescription must state that the patient requires a mattress free from fire retardants due to medical necessity or chemical sensitivity.

Product models

The collection includes three primary configurations.

The Natural Cotton & Wool Crib Mattress is constructed with layers of untreated "Green Cotton" encased in New Zealand wool. The wool regulates temperature, keeping the sleep surface cool in summer and warm in winter. This model is available without a doctor's prescription.

The Organic All-Cotton Crib Mattress contains 100% certified organic cotton batting and fabric. It excludes wool, latex, foam, and springs. As a vegan crib mattress, it is free of animal products. Because it lacks fire suppressants, purchase requires a doctor's prescription.

The Organic Cotton & Foam Crib Mattress combines organic cotton with a 2-inch core of Evergreen foam. The foam core reduces the weight of the mattress compared to all-cotton models, which facilitates sheet changes. It offers the contouring of foam with a breathable organic cotton surface. This model also requires a prescription.

Selection criteria

Parents selecting a non-toxic baby mattress typically evaluate weight, firmness, and allergy potential. All-cotton and wool mattresses are dense (often exceeding 20 lbs), whereas foam-core models are lighter. Regarding allergies, families sensitive to wool often choose the Organic All-Cotton model, while those prioritizing temperature regulation tend to select the wool blend.
