Collection: Bed Mattresses
Our hybrid bed mattresses are designed for people who want a healthier, more natural place to sleep every night—without sacrificing the familiar support of a traditional luxury mattress. Built with thoughtfully chosen materials like organic cotton, wool, and latex, each natural bed mattress pairs these breathable fibers with heavy-duty innerspring support systems.
Whether you prefer a firm, supportive feel or a more cushioned surface, these mattresses are engineered for longevity in primary bedrooms. Unlike synthetic foam beds that trap heat, our collection allows air to flow freely through the coil systems and natural batting, creating a sleep environment that is cool, dry, and free from the chemical off-gassing found in conventional brands.
To fine-tune comfort and materials, you can explore core constructions across both the natural mattress collection and the more specialized organic bed mattress assortment. These ranges include designs that pair well with simple, slatted platform bed frames as well as higher-profile solid wood bed bases, so you can match the height and feel of your mattress to your preferred bedroom style.
If you’re drawn to traditional craftsmanship and extra-firm support, the hand-built designs in our old-fashioned mattress collection offer a denser, more grounded feel that many sleepers appreciate for back support. For those who want a curated overview of the best options in one place, the Signature Mattress Collection highlights popular natural and organic models that work especially well on modern beds, from simple wood platforms to captain’s beds with built-in storage.
Many sleepers pair these mattresses with breathable foundations and accessories to complete a fully non-toxic setup. Slatted wood bases and tatami-compatible frames from our tatami bed selection help improve airflow under the mattress, while natural toppers and protectors from the mattress topper collection and organic mattress protector range let you adjust firmness, temperature, and moisture management without relying on synthetic foams.

The Hybrid Advantage: Coils + Nature
While our futons offer a grounded, cotton-core feel, our Bed Mattress collection introduces the dynamic support of steel coils. We feature models with individually encased coils that contour to your body and isolate motion, as well as traditional heavy-duty innersprings for maximum durability. These steel cores are then wrapped in plush layers of certified organic cotton, wool, and latex. This "Hybrid" construction gives you the best of both worlds: the deep, structural support of a coil mattress with the non-toxic, breathable comfort of natural fibers.
Chemical-Free & Glueless Design
A truly healthy mattress goes beyond just the fabric on top. Many mattresses in this collection feature innovative glueless encasement designs, eliminating the need for toxic adhesives that can break down and off-gas over time. Instead of chemical flame retardants, we utilize the natural safety of organic wool batting to meet fire standards. From the steel springs to the organic cotton surface, every layer is selected to minimize your exposure to synthetic foams and harsh chemicals, ensuring a safe sanctuary for rest.
Built to Last: Two-Sided Craftsmanship
In a world of disposable "bed-in-a-box" foam mattresses, we believe in traditional durability. This collection includes two-sided (flippable) mattresses, a feature rarely found in modern bedding. By allowing you to flip and rotate your mattress, you can ensure even wear and extended comfort life, getting twice the durability out of your investment. Whether you choose a flippable innerspring or a specific no-flip encased coil design, these beds are substantial, handcrafted, and built to support you for decades, not just years.

Frequently Asked Questions: Bed Mattresses
How is this different from your Futon mattresses?
The main difference is the core. Our futons use a core of compressed cotton, wool, or latex (no springs). Our Bed Mattresses are Hybrid Innersprings, meaning they have a steel coil support system inside. This makes them thicker (typically 10-12 inches), bouncier, and more similar in feel to a traditional "luxury hotel" mattress, while still using the same natural materials on the surface.
Do these mattresses contain foam?
It depends on the model. Some of our natural hybrid mattresses are completely foam-free, using only coils, cotton, and wool. Others may use a layer of certified organic latex or safe, non-toxic support foam for pressure relief. We do not use "memory foam" or unstable polyurethane foams that off-gas harmful VOCs.
Are these mattresses flippable?
We offer both styles. Many of our traditional innerspring models are two-sided (flippable), allowing you to sleep on both sides to extend the life of the mattress. Other models, particularly those with sophisticated encased coil systems, are designed as one-sided (no-flip) with a specific support base and a plush comfort top. Please check the specific product description for details.
Do I need a box spring?
You do not need a traditional "box spring" (which actually contains springs), but you do need a solid foundation. These mattresses work perfectly on platform beds, slat foundations (with slats no more than 3 inches apart), or a solid wood foundation. Because these mattresses are heavy and substantial, they require a sturdy base to perform correctly.
Are there flame retardants?
No. Just like our futon collection, we prioritize natural safety. We use a layer of natural wool quilted into the cover. Wool is inherently flame-resistant and allows our mattresses to pass federal flammability tests (16 CFR 1633) without the use of chemical sprays, fiberglass barriers, or fire-retardant powders.
