Collection: Natural Futon Mattresses
Our natural futon mattress collection gets back to basics with all-natural, cotton-core designs that breathe better and last longer. By using dense unbleached cotton (and supportive wool or latex), these mattresses deliver a cooler, firmer, and more grounded sleep. Each mattress is hand-tufted to keep the natural fibers in place, ensuring consistent support year after year. Perfect for platform beds and tatami mats, this is the clean, chemical-free upgrade your home deserves.
In this collection, you’ll find core designs that prioritize natural fibers and solid support, ideal for people transitioning away from foam-based or heavily treated mattresses. We use layers of natural cotton and wool to create a breathable foundation that wicks away moisture. Whether you choose a pure cotton core or a hybrid with natural latex, these models provide a comfortable, grounded sleep surface that pairs perfectly with slatted frames and simple platform bases.
If you are looking for these same high-quality designs but with stricter material certifications, explore our Organic Mattress collection. This line offers the same supportive comfort but is crafted exclusively with certified organic cotton and certified organic latex—ideal for the eco-conscious sleeper who wants the purest possible ingredient list.
For those seeking a premium, artisanal finish, consider our Japanese-Style Futon Mattresses. These are our "old-fashioned" handmade alternatives, where we layer and compress the materials by hand to create a denser, more traditional feel that stands the test of time.
We also cater to true minimalist sleepers. If you prefer a rollable, floor-sleeping system, browse our thin Shikibuton floor mattresses. Conversely, if you need to soften your current setup, our breathable Natural Mattress Toppers add a layer of plush comfort without sacrificing underlying support.
Our commitment to natural sleep extends to the whole family and every bedroom style. We offer safe, chemical-free options in our Baby Mattresses collection. Or, if you prefer a standard Western-style profile over the futon look, check out our Bed Mattresses for a familiar height and feel with natural materials.

What is "Natural Cotton"?
Our natural cotton mattresses are crafted with a premium grade of unbleached cotton batting (often referred to in the industry as "Green Cotton"). While it doesn't carry the expensive GOTS certification, it is grown without heavy pesticides and processed without harsh chemical bleaches or dyes. This gives you the best natural mattress experience—pure, breathable, and safe for your skin—at a much more accessible price point. It’s the smart choice for guest rooms, kids' rooms, or budget-conscious healthy living.
Natural Latex & Foam Support
Just because it’s affordable doesn’t mean it lacks support. Selected models in this collection feature a core of natural latex (tapped from rubber trees) or CertiPUR-US® certified high-density foam for added resilience and pressure relief. We also wrap most cores of our mattresses in natural wool, which acts as a humidity regulator and a chemical-free fire barrier. This combination makes our natural futon mattresses resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew without relying on the synthetic treatments found in conventional brands.

Frequently Asked Questions: Natural Mattresses
What is the difference between "Natural" and "Organic"?
This is the most important distinction. Our Natural mattresses use high-quality, unbleached cotton and natural wool. These materials are safe and clean, but they do not carry the government certifications (GOTS/GOLS) found in organic mattresses. By skipping the certification paperwork, we can offer a natural futon mattress with similar purity and comfort at a significantly lower price.
Are these suitable for allergies?
Yes. Even without the organic stamp, our materials are hypoallergenic. Natural cotton and wool are breathable and resist moisture, which naturally discourages dust mites and mold growth. Unless you have a specific, severe chemical sensitivity (MCS), our natural mattress line is usually sufficient for allergy sufferers.
Do these mattresses contain flame retardants?
It depends on the model. Most of our mattresses use a thick layer of natural wool as the fire barrier, which naturally meets federal safety standards (16 CFR 1633). However, for some of our mattresses, like all-cotton models that do not use wool, we treat the cotton batting with natural boron. This is a safe, non-toxic mineral (similar to table salt) that provides effective fire resistance without the use of dangerous chemical sprays or fiberglass.
What sizes are available?
We offer all standard sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King. We can also make custom sizes for RVs or antique frames—just contact us.
Is there a "new mattress smell"?
There is virtually no chemical off-gassing scent. However, natural cotton has an earthy, "barn-like" aroma because it still contains natural oils and seed particles. This scent is normal, safe, and typically fades within a few weeks of airing out.
Can I use this on a regular bed frame?
Yes, as long as it has slats. These are heavy, flexible mattresses. They work best on platform beds with slats spaced 3 inches apart or less. If you have a metal frame, we recommend adding a tatami mat or bunkie board to provide a solid surface.
