Collection: Organic Futon Mattresses
Experience the purest sleep possible with our organic futon mattress collection, designed for those who refuse to compromise on ingredient safety or comfort. Handcrafted using certified organic cotton, virgin organic wool, and GOLS-certified organic latex, these mattresses are strictly free from synthetic foams, pesticides, and chemical flame retardants. Whether you need the contouring support of an organic latex mattress or the breathable firmness of coconut coir, this collection offers a certified non-toxic sanctuary for your home.
This collection represents our highest standard of purity. We’ve upgraded the core components to include certified organic materials, providing superior pressure relief and durability compared to standard cotton-only batting. These materials are naturally antimicrobial and temperature-regulating, making them the best organic mattress choice for people with chemical sensitivities (MCS) or parents seeking a truly restorative, healthy sleep environment for their family.
If you love the feel of natural materials but don't strictly require international organic certifications, our Natural Futon Mattresses collection offers a similar level of comfort at a more accessible price point. The Natural line uses high-quality untreated cotton and wool, serving as an excellent entry point into chemical-free sleep.
For those who prefer a denser, less "bouncy" feel than latex provides, we recommend exploring our Japanese-Style Futon Mattresses. These "Old-Fashioned" handmade options focus on heavy cotton layering and hand-compression, offering a traditional, solid foundation that is distinct from the more resilient feel of our organic latex hybrids.
We also apply these organic standards to our minimalist designs. If you are a dedicated floor sleeper, browse our Organic Shikibutons for a rollable, stowable bed system. To fine-tune your comfort, add one of our plush Organic Mattress Toppers, which add a cloud-like surface layer without compromising the support underneath.
Safe sleep is vital for every member of the family. We offer these same rigorous standards in our Baby Mattresses collection to protect your little ones. For a standard height profile that fits conventional bedroom setups, browse our Organic Bed Mattresses.

Certified Organic Cotton & Wool
What makes a mattress "Organic"? Verification. Unlike standard "natural" mattresses, the components in this collection carry global certifications. We use organic cotton mattress batting that is grown without toxic pesticides and processed without harsh bleaches. We wrap this core in pure, untreated organic wool, which acts as a natural humidity regulator and a safe, chemical-free fire barrier. This ensures that you are not just buying a "green" product, but one that is verifiably free from the VOCs and off-gassing found in conventional bedding.
The Organic Latex Advantage
For sleepers who find traditional cotton futons too firm, our organic latex mattress hybrids are the perfect solution. By integrating a core of organic latex (tapped from Hevea rubber trees), we add resilience, "bounce," and pressure relief to the mattress. Latex creates a surface that contours to your hips and shoulders while resisting the body impressions that can form in pure cotton beds. This combination of fluffy organic cotton and supportive latex delivers the comfort of a luxury bed with the honest simplicity of a futon.

Frequently Asked Questions: Organic Mattresses
What is the difference between "Natural" and "Organic"?
This is our most common question. Our Natural collection uses high-quality, unbleached "Green Cotton" and natural wool—it is safe and clean, but lacks paperwork. Our Organic collection uses materials that are certified (GOTS for cotton/wool, GOLS for latex). If you have severe chemical sensitivities or require the paperwork for peace of mind, choose the Organic collection.
Do these mattresses smell?
Yes, but it is the scent of nature, not chemicals. Because our organic cotton is unbleached and unprocessed, it retains natural oils and seed particles that have a distinct, earthy, or musky aroma. Some customers describe it as smelling like a field or hay. This scent is strongest when the mattress is fresh out of the packaging and typically dissipates within a few weeks of airing out.
Are these mattresses fire safe?
Yes. We pass federal flammability standards naturally. We use a thick layer of natural or organic wool as a fire barrier. Wool is hard to ignite and self-extinguishes. This allows us to make a safe organic mattress without using borate powders, fiberglass socks, or chemical sprays.
How does the Organic Latex Hybrid feel?
It feels "bouncier" and more supportive than a traditional cotton futon. While 100% cotton mattresses feel very firm and "dead" (no pushback), adding a latex core provides resistance. It cushions your pressure points (hips and shoulders) and instantly springs back when you move, making it excellent for side sleepers.
What sizes are available?
We make these in all standard sizes: Twin, Organic Twin XL, Full, Organic Queen, King, and California King. Because most of our mattresses are handmade, we can also craft custom sizes for antique beds or vans—contact us for a quote.
Is this suitable for a platform bed?
Yes. These are substantial mattresses (typically 6-8 inches thick) designed for everyday use on a platform bed. We recommend a slat spacing of 3 inches or less to support the weight of the organic latex and cotton. They are also compatible with tatami mats.
