Collection: Floor Beds
Experience the authentic freedom of a Japanese floor bed. Our all-in-one floor bed kits combine a supportive, hand-crafted shikibuton floor mattress with a folding tatami mat base to create a complete sleeping system without the bulk of a permanent frame. Designed for modern flexibility, these portable floor beds are easy to use and even easier to store. Simply roll up your mattress and fold the tatami base to reclaim your floor space during the day. Whether for a minimalist master bedroom, a multipurpose guest room, or a meditation space, these natural fiber setups offer a breathable, grounded sleep experience that adapts to your life.
Most floor bed arrangements start with a firm, breathable base that supports healthy alignment. Many people choose a traditional Japanese shikibuton-style mattress from our shikibuton and futon mattress collection, then layer it over woven tatami mats for added structure, texture, and airflow. This combination maintains a close-to-the-floor profile while giving your body a stable, naturally cushioned surface that’s easy to roll or fold when you need the floor back.
Ventilation is especially important in low setups, which is why many floor bed customers add breathable bases under the mattress. Natural coir bed rugs and coconut-fiber layers from our mattress rug collection help keep the underside of your bedding drier and better ventilated, while a soft topper from our natural mattress toppers can add extra pressure relief at the shoulders and hips without losing that grounded feel.
Because floor beds take up less visual space than tall frames, they’re especially well-suited to small bedrooms, studio apartments, and multipurpose rooms that need to feel open during the day. A neatly folded duvet, a few layered blankets, and supportive pillows can turn a simple sleeping area into a cozy retreat, while still being easy to move or reconfigure as your needs change.

The Complete Floor Sleeping System
A true Japanese floor bed is more than just a mattress on the ground. It is a system designed for hygiene and comfort. Our kits pair a 100% cotton or wool futon floor mattress (shikibuton) with a folding tatami mat. The tatami mat acts as a breathable barrier, lifting the mattress slightly off the floor to prevent moisture buildup and provide a firm, flat surface. This combination ensures that your floor futon bed remains dry, clean, and supportive, mimicking the traditional washitsu sleeping experience found in Japan.
Healthier Back Support & Grounding
Many people switch to floor beds for the orthopedic benefits. Sleeping on a firm surface helps align the spine and reduce back pain caused by sagging soft mattresses. A Japanese style floor bed offers rigid support that promotes natural posture. Additionally, the practice of "grounding"—sleeping closer to the earth—is valued for its calming effects. By eliminating synthetic foams and metal springs, our natural floor bedding creates a quiet, chemical-free environment conducive to deep rest.
Frequently Asked Questions: Japanese Floor Beds
What is included in a floor bed kit?
Our floor bed kits typically include two key components: a shikibuton (a traditional Japanese cotton mattress) and a folding tatami mat. Some kits may also include a removable cotton cover. This provides everything you need to start sleeping on the floor immediately.
Is sleeping on the floor good for your back?
Yes. A japanese floor bed provides a firm, flat surface that prevents the hips from sinking too deeply, which can help align the spine. Many sleepers report reduced lower back pain after switching to a firm floor mattress.
Do I need to put away the bed every day?
Traditionally, yes. In Japan, the futon floor mattress is rolled up and stored in a closet daily to let the floor breathe and free up space. However, you can leave it out if you prefer. We strongly recommend folding or rolling it at least once a week to air out the bottom of the mattress and prevent mold.
How do I prevent mold on a floor bed?
Mold occurs when moisture gets trapped between the mattress and the floor. The tatami mat in our kit helps significantly by allowing airflow. To further prevent mold, simply flip your mattress regularly and expose the tatami mat to fresh air or sunlight occasionally.
Can I use a floor bed for guests?
Absolutely. A portable floor bed is the ultimate guest solution. Unlike a bulky air mattress, it offers real comfort and support. When the guests leave, you can fold the tatami mat and roll the mattress into a closet, reclaiming your room instantly.
What sizes are available?
We offer floor beds in Twin, Full, and Queen sizes. A King size japanese floor bed can be created by placing two Twin XL mats and mattresses side-by-side, which makes them easier to move and store than one massive King mattress.
