Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tatami mat and how can I use it in my home?
A key element of Japanese culture, tatami mats provide a natural, versatile, and comfortable surface. They are available in various sizes, making it easy to customize your space. You can use them to build a complete tatami room, create a cozy corner for lounging, yoga, and meditation, or serve as a breathable base for a floor mattress. Their natural colors and textures blend beautifully with both modern and traditional interiors.
Can I use a tatami mat with a Japanese futon or shikibuton?
Yes, a tatami is essential if you enjoy minimalist living or a traditional futon mattress experience. When paired with a shikibuton setup, these mats provide excellent firm support and breathability. They create a natural sleeping surface that promotes relaxation and better rest.
What are the benefits of choosing a tatami mat?
Beyond their timeless aesthetic, tatami mats offer a firm, breathable foundation crafted from sustainable, biodegradable materials, making them an eco-friendly choice. The natural woven rush grass also releases a subtle, calming scent that freshens your space and helps improve air quality.
What materials are used to make the core of the tatami mat?
The mats we offer use a compressed 100% rice straw core, which follows the traditional Japanese construction method. We do not use foam or particle board. The traditional woven rush grass surface is securely wrapped around this firm rice-straw base.
Are adhesives or synthetic binders used inside the core?
No. The rice straw core is compressed and stitched together. We do not use any glues or chemical binders inside the core.
Where are your tatami mats manufactured?
Our tatami mats are manufactured in China, strictly utilizing traditional Japanese-style construction methods to ensure an authentic feel, durability, and high quality.
Is the rush grass treated with pesticides, fungicides, or anti-mold chemicals?
No. The igusa (rush grass) used for the surface is a completely natural plant material and is not treated with pesticides or chemical fungicides. The grass is thoroughly cleaned and dried during production, which naturally prevents mold. Additionally, tatami grass has natural moisture-regulating and antibacterial properties.
Are the mats chemically fumigated during shipping?
No chemical fumigation is used. To ensure the mats are clean and safe for export, the materials are heat-dried during production. This heat treatment safely removes insects and moisture before shipping.
Does a tatami mat have a scent?
Yes. Because they are made from natural igusa (rush grass), our tatami mats can have a noticeable grassy or earthy aroma when first unboxed. This scent is a natural trait of authentic tatami and is not a defect. It is typically strongest right after unpacking and will usually fade within a few days to several weeks, depending on the ventilation and humidity in your home. Many people find the fragrance pleasant and calming, but if you are sensitive to natural scents, we recommend airing the mats in a well-ventilated space before use.
