  • Hardwood

Solid Mahogany Hardwood Sourced from Indonesia

This collection is built from 100% solid mahogany hardwood sourced from Indonesia — real hardwood construction with a naturally rich tone and a smooth, refined grain. No MDF or particle board; just solid wood chosen for lasting presence and long-term use.

  • Renewable materials

    Responsibly Sourced Indonesian Mahogany

Mahogany from Indonesia is supplied through managed forestry programs designed to support ongoing regrowth and long-term forest productivity. Choosing solid mahogany is a practical move away from short-lived composites and “fast furniture” materials, favoring a renewable hardwood built for longevity.

  • Eco-conscious

    Low-Waste, Long-Life Craftsmanship

Our build approach focuses on getting the most out of every board: efficient cut planning, precise joinery, and real hardwood surfaces instead of veneer-wrapped cores. Scraps are repurposed when possible, packaging is reused or recycled, and the end result is furniture designed to last for decades rather than be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials is the Tatami Bed made from?

The Tatami Bed is crafted from 100% solid Indonesian mahogany hardwood — a dense, naturally durable wood prized for its stability and resistance to warping. Each piece is finished without toxic chemicals, keeping it safe for a natural home environment.

Does the Tatami Bed come with a headboard?

No — the standard configuration ships with 4 side rails and no headboard, keeping the frame minimal and versatile. If you'd like to add one later, the Tatami Bed Headboard is sold separately and designed to fit the frame exactly — simply swap out the short side rail when you're ready.

Can I place a mattress directly on the slats?

It's not recommended for most mattresses. The slats are rigid but spaced approximately 4–5 inches apart depending on the frame size — too wide to support most futon mattresses directly. If you want to use a futon mattress without a base layer, our thick hand-made futon mattresses at 6 inches or more are dense enough to span the gaps. For Western mattresses, check with the manufacturer first — depending on the mattress construction, the wide spacing may cause sagging over time. For the best result with any mattress type, we recommend placing a tatami mat or coconut coir pad on the slats first, which distributes weight evenly and adds a breathable, natural base layer.

What mattress works best with the Tatami Bed?

The Tatami Bed requires a base layer between the slats and your mattress — the 4–5" slat spacing is too wide to support a mattress directly. Tatami mats are the ideal choice — they sit perfectly within the frame and create the traditional Japanese sleep surface when topped with a shikibuton or thin futon mattress. A natural coir pad is also a good option for a firmer, breathable base. For those using a standard Western mattress, a solid foundation or bed rug placed on the slats works well.

What is the difference between the Standard and Low leg options?

Standard legs measure 16" and provide 11.25" of floor clearance — enough for under-bed storage. Low legs measure 8" and provide 3.25" of clearance, bringing the sleeping surface closer to the floor for a more grounded, Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Custom leg heights between 7" and 16" are also available — specify your preferred height in the order comments. Note that custom legs are final sale.

Does the Tatami Bed require tools to assemble?

No. The frame uses interlocking joinery with no screws, bolts, or exposed hardware. Pieces fit together precisely and the assembly is tool-free.

Does the Twin size come with a center support leg?

No — the center rail and support leg are included with Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes only. The Twin frame is structurally supported without it given its narrower span.

Is the Tatami Bed suitable for a floor-level or low-profile setup?

Yes. The Low leg option at 8" brings the frame close to the floor, and custom legs can be cut down to 7" for the lowest possible profile. Paired with a thin shikibuton or futon mattress, this creates a true floor-sleeping aesthetic with the structural support of a solid wood frame.
