Mission Bent Arm Amish Futon Frame – Custom Build

This is the custom-build version of our Mission Bent Arm Amish Futon Sofa Bed, with steam-bent arm tops and vertical side slats. The stocked version is made in oak, full or queen, unfinished or linseed oil. Choose this page for other woods, stains, or chair and loveseat sizes. Custom builds are sold as frames only.

Each frame is built to order by Amish woodworkers in western Pennsylvania, with the same design, solid hardwood, and mortise-and-tenon joinery as the stocked frame. Custom frames ship in about 4-6 weeks.

Every screen and mobile device shows color differently, and the final color also depends on the grain and species of the wood, so swatches may not exactly match the finished frame. Real wood samples of any wood and finish are available on request, and we recommend one before ordering.

Sizes

Available in chair, loveseat, full, and queen sizes. Chair and loveseat available with matching ottomans. Every size converts from sofa to bed. On the chair and loveseat, the ottoman sits at the end of the open frame to extend the sleeping surface, and works as a footrest when the frame is upright.

Woods

• Oak: the same American white oak as our stocked frames. Open, pronounced grain that takes stain with strong contrast.
• Rough sawn oak: oak with a saw-textured surface that gives a rustic, hand-hewn character.
• Brown maple: a dense maple with a smooth, tight grain and natural color variation from cream to brown streaks. Takes stain more evenly than oak.
• Cherry: fine, smooth grain with a warm reddish tone that deepens noticeably with light exposure over the first months.
• Hickory: the hardest wood in the range, with bold contrast between light and dark streaks for a rustic look.
  

The workshop's hardwood comes from U.S. forests in Ohio, Pennsylvania, upstate New York, Vermont, and Maine.

Finishes

• Unfinished: raw, sanded wood with no coating. VOC-free and chemical-free.
• Linseed Oil: hand-rubbed plant-based oil that penetrates the wood and deepens the grain. VOC-free and chemical-free.
• Clear: a workshop-applied clear topcoat with no stain. A clear finish mutes the wood grain detail compared with oil.
• Stained: one of seven Ohio Collection stains, sealed with the clear topcoat.

Stain colors

Our stains come from the Ohio Collection (OCS), a standard color system used by Amish furniture makers. Stains with the same OCS code are the same color, so the code lets you match Amish furniture you already own.

• Provincial (OCS-112): light golden brown
• Seely (OCS-104): light-to-medium warm brown
• Black Walnut (OCS-105): medium brown
• Harvest (OCS-116): medium brown with warm undertones
• Michael's (OCS-113): reddish-brown cherry tone
• Rich Tobacco (OCS-228): deep, dark brown
• Onyx (OCS-230): near-black

Clear and stained finishes are workshop-applied coatings. The stains are low-VOC, solvent-based products. If you have chemical sensitivities, choose Unfinished or Linseed Oil.
