Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose the "Bent Arm" Mission style?
The Bent Arm Mission style adds a touch of grace to the sturdy construction of traditional Amish furniture. Unlike rigid square designs, the top of the armrest features a gentle, steam-bent curve that follows the natural resting position of your arm, making it exceptionally comfortable for lounging. Visually, this curve softens the strong vertical lines of the slats, creating a classic American look that feels both robust and inviting.
What materials are used in this frame?
This frame is built exclusively from solid American oak. You won't find any veneers, particle board, or softwood fillers here. We source our lumber from responsibly managed forests in the USA, resulting in a heavy, dense product that feels significantly more substantial than the lightweight import frames found at big-box stores.
Should I choose "Unfinished" or "Natural"?
You have two options depending on your preference for purity and maintenance:
- Unfinished: This is raw, sanded oak. It is the best choice if you plan to stain the wood to match existing furniture or if you require a zero-VOC environment with absolutely no applied finishes.
- Natural (Linseed Oil): We apply a hand-rubbed coat of linseed oil to seal the wood. This enhances the grain's depth and protects against dirt without forming a plastic-like film. It is a breathable, non-toxic finish that is safe for organic homes.
Is this frame sturdy enough for heavy adults?
Yes. The combination of solid oak and mortise-and-tenon joinery creates an incredibly rigid structure. Unlike metal frames that can bend or squeak, this Amish-made futon is engineered to handle significant weight. It easily supports two adults for nightly sleeping or three adults for daily seating without compromising stability.
Can I sleep on this every night?
Definitely. This isn't just a temporary guest bed; it is a supportive platform designed for daily rest. The hardwood slats are spaced to provide proper airflow and rigidity for your mattress. To maximize comfort, we suggest using a dense, high-quality mattress (such as wool, latex, or heavy cotton) that complements the frame's solid support.
What is the assembly process like?
The frame arrives flat-packed. While you will need to assemble it, the process is logical and parts fit together tightly due to the precision of Amish manufacturing. We strongly advise having a second person help you, not because it is complicated, but because the solid oak components are heavy and easier to maneuver with four hands.
Does it require wall clearance?
Yes. To convert the frame from the upright sofa position into a flat bed, the back deck needs room to recline. You should place the frame a few inches away from the wall to ensure the wood doesn't graze your paint during conversion.
