Classic Bent Arm Amish-Made American Oak Futon Sofa Bed

The Mission Flat Arm and Mission Bent Arm have arms that stay level from front to back. The Classic Bent Arm has a pronounced arm that rises and curves toward the back of the frame, creating a flowing, sculpted silhouette. It reads more traditional and refined, and the curved arm gives a comfortable, supportive place to lean while lounging.

The frame is built entirely from solid hardwood, including the slats. The stock frame is American oak. Custom builds are available in brown maple, cherry, hickory, or rough sawn oak. The workshop's lumber comes from U.S. forests in Ohio, Pennsylvania, upstate New York, Vermont, and Maine. We don't use particle board, MDF, veneers, or softwood fillers, and the mortise-and-tenon joints are assembled with water-based wood glue.

The workshop builds these frames from American white oak. White oak is denser and more durable than red oak, with a neutral grain and without red oak's pinkish undertones. That makes it a strong foundation for everyday use and a natural fit for the Classic style.

In western Pennsylvania, by Amish craftsmen using traditional woodworking methods. Each frame is cut, joined, hand-sanded, and hand-finished in the same workshop.

It's built from U.S.-grown hardwood in Pennsylvania, which keeps the supply chain short. The joints are assembled with water-based wood glue, with no solvent-based adhesives. It's offered unfinished or with plant-based linseed oil, both VOC-free and chemical-free. And because solid oak and mortise-and-tenon joinery last for decades, the frame doesn't need to be replaced every few years.

• Unfinished: raw, sanded oak with no coating. Choose it if you plan to stain the wood yourself, or if you have strong chemical sensitivities and want nothing on the wood.
• Linseed Oil: hand-rubbed with plant-based oil that penetrates the wood and brings out the grain without forming a plastic-like film.

Both options are VOC-free and chemical-free.

Yes. Select the Custom Build option on this page. Custom frames are available in chair, loveseat, full, or queen. Woods are oak, brown maple, cherry, hickory, or rough sawn oak. Finishes are unfinished, linseed oil, clear, or one of seven low-VOC stains: Harvest, Michael's, Onyx, Provincial, Rich Tobacco, Seely, or Walnut. The clear and stain finishes are workshop-applied coatings. Custom frames are sold as frames only and ship in about 4-6 weeks.

It fits any standard full or queen futon mattress made for bi-fold frames, 6 to 8 inches thick. That includes cotton-and-wool, foam, latex, most Japanese-style mattresses, and bi-fold spring futon mattresses. Standard innerspring bed mattresses don't fold and aren't suitable. The frame is rated for 600 lb combined and works as an everyday bed.

Yes. The frame ships flat-packed to reduce shipping size and cost. The bolt holes line up and the joinery fits cleanly. Two people are recommended because the solid oak parts are heavy. When converting to a bed, pull the frame a few inches from the wall so the back deck has room to recline.
