Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose the "Flat Arm" Mission style?
The Flat Arm Mission style is one of our most popular designs because it blends functionality with the classic Arts and Crafts aesthetic. The wide, flat armrests are substantial enough to rest a cup of coffee or a phone on, acting like built-in side tables. This design also highlights the solid pattern of the American oak grain, showcasing the natural beauty of the wood on the broad top surfaces.
Is this really 100% solid wood?
Yes. This is a genuine Amish oak futon frame, meaning it is constructed entirely from solid American oak hardwoods harvested in the USA. We do not use particle board, MDF, veneers, or softwood fillers. The weight of the shipping boxes alone confirms the density and quality of the material—this is a heavy-duty frame built for decades of use.
What is the difference between "Unfinished" and "Natural"?
We offer this Amish made futon in two states to suit your chemical sensitivity needs:
- Unfinished: The raw, sanded oak wood with absolutely no coating. This is perfect if you want to apply your own specific stain or if you have extreme chemical sensitivities and want zero topical products on your furniture.
- Natural (Linseed Oil): The frame is hand-rubbed with natural linseed oil. This non-toxic, plant-based finish protects the wood and enhances the grain depth without using harsh synthetic lacquers or VOC-heavy varnishes.
How much weight can this frame support?
Thanks to the dense oak construction and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery used by our Amish craftsmen, this frame is exceptionally strong. It is designed to support significantly more weight than standard metal or pine imports. While we don't list a specific breaking point, it easily accommodates two adults sleeping or three adults seated for daily use without bowing or creaking.
Does this frame work as an everyday bed?
Absolutely. Many of our customers use this oak futon frame as their primary bed. Because the slats are solid hardwood and spaced properly, they provide a rigid, non-sagging foundation for your mattress. For the best sleep experience, we recommend pairing it with one of our thicker organic cotton, wool, or latex futon mattresses that offer proper spinal support.
How much assembly is required?
The frame ships flat-packed to save on shipping costs and environmental impact. Assembly is required, but it is straightforward. Because this is a precision-engineered futon made in USA, the bolt holes line up correctly, and the joinery fits together cleanly. We recommend two people for the assembly process, primarily because the solid oak components are heavy to lift and maneuver.
Do I need to pull it away from the wall to open it?
Yes, like most traditional bi-fold futon frames, the back deck requires some clearance to pivot down into the bed position. We generally recommend pulling the frame a few inches away from the wall before converting it from a sofa to a bed to avoid scraping the wall or the wood.
