Collection: Shikibuton Mattresses

Shikibuton mattresses (often listed as shikifutons, “shiki” mattresses, or tatami mattresses) are slim, supportive Japanese-style futons designed for authentic, low-profile sleep. Inspired by traditional Japanese sleeping mats, every floor futon mattress in this collection features a breathable cotton-based build with a traditional 3–4" thickness. Unlike bulky Western mattresses, a shikibuton is meant to be rolled or folded daily, allowing you to reclaim your living space. Firm yet comfortable, they are perfect for minimalism, guest setups, and multipurpose rooms.

A true floor sleep system often requires the right foundation to manage moisture and comfort. We highly recommend pairing your Shikibuton with traditional Tatami Mats for a breathable structure or Coconut Coir Bed Rugs to promote airflow on hard surfaces. These natural bases protect the mattress and add a layer of resilient comfort that enhances the grounded feel. For a complete, easy-to-buy setup, check out our pre-bundled Floor Sleeping Kits.

Shikibutons are significantly firmer and thinner than standard beds. If you are looking for a mattress that offers more cushion depth or can be used on a sofa frame, consider our Japanese-Style Futon Mattresses (the thicker, hand-made sibling) or our standard Natural Futon Mattresses.

Unsure if floor sleeping is right for you? Compare the profile and firmness of these mats against our thicker options on our Mattress Comparison page, or read our guide to traditional Japanese sleep systems in the Learning Center.

What is a Shikibuton?

Shikibutons are traditional Japanese futon mattresses designed to provide simplicity, comfort, and support. Crafted with natural materials like cotton, wool, or latex, these mattresses offer a firm yet cozy sleeping surface that promotes healthy spinal alignment. Unlike bulky Western mattresses, shikibutons are lightweight, foldable, and easy to store, making them ideal for minimalist living and versatile spaces. Whether placed directly on tatami mats or paired with a platform bed, shikibutons deliver a refreshing, breathable sleep experience rooted in Japanese tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions: Shiki Futon Mattresses

What is a Comfort Pure Shikibuton?

Our shikibuton is a Japanese-style floor mattress designed for modern daily sleep. While it maintains the traditional low profile (3 to 4 inches thick), we construct it with high-quality layers of cotton and wool to ensure lasting support. It offers the minimalist aesthetic of a floor mat with the durability needed for nightly rest.

How is this different from a lightweight "Mat"?

The main difference is cushion and longevity. Many imported mats are very thin and can flatten out quickly. Our shikibutons are hand-tufted and built with enough material to protect your pressure points from the hard floor. This makes them substantial enough to serve as your primary bed, rather than just a temporary guest mat.

Can I place this directly on the floor?

We do not recommend placing any natural mattress directly on a sealed floor (like wood, tile, or laminate). Without airflow, body moisture can get trapped underneath, potentially leading to mold. To keep your mattress fresh and dry, we recommend placing it on a breathable barrier like a tatami mat or a coconut coir pad.

Why do you add wool to the cotton?

Authentic Japanese mats are often 100% cotton, but in many climates, that can lead to dampness. On most models, we wrap our cores in natural wool because it creates a drier, more comfortable sleep environment. Wool naturally wicks moisture away from your body and acts as a safe, chemical-free fire barrier.

Will the mattress change feel over time?

Yes. Natural cotton fibers "settle" and firm up with use. Your shikibuton may arrive looking slightly puffy or rounded, but over the first few weeks, it will compress into a firmer, flatter, and more stable sleeping surface. This "settling" is intentional and creates the grounded support that floor sleepers prefer.

Is it easy to roll up and store?

Yes. These mattresses are designed to be flexible. You can roll them up or trifold them to clear your floor space during the day. While they are substantial enough to stay in place while you sleep, they are manageable for one person to move and store in a closet or corner.

Can I use this on a bed frame?

You can, but you must be careful with the slats. Because the mattress is only 3-4 inches thick, you may feel the slats if they are spaced too far apart. If you prefer a raised bed, we recommend using a tatami mat or a solid bunkie board over the slats to create a flat, even foundation.
